The mice of olde placed these bells on cats so they could hear them coming from afar. These bells also granted the cats freedom wherever the mice lived as the mice dared not act upon their new detection system.
As time drew on the cats wearing these bells became wiser to them. They honed their ears so they could pick up when the bell was making even the slightest noise as they were stalking their prey.
